The 8-day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as one of the best ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, offering excellent acclimatization, breathtaking scenery, and a high summit success rate. Beginning on the western side of the mountain, this route provides a quieter and more remote start before joining the Machame Route along the way.
Trekkers will pass through diverse landscapes including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone, making it one of the most scenic and rewarding Kilimanjaro routes.
The Lemosho Route is designed for gradual acclimatization, making it ideal for climbers who want to maximize their chances of reaching Uhuru Peak. The extended 8-day itinerary allows the body to adjust slowly to altitude while enjoying a less crowded approach in the early days of the trek.
Supported by a professional mountain crew, you will experience high standards of safety and comfort throughout the climb. The highlight is the summit night, where you ascend under the stars to reach Uhuru Peak at sunrise, standing at the highest point in Africa with unforgettable panoramic views.
Your journey begins with a drive from Arusha or Moshi to Londorossi Gate for registration. From there, you will proceed to the trailhead and begin your trek through the lush rainforest. The trail is rich with vegetation, towering trees, and possible sightings of monkeys and birds. After a gentle ascent, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, where you will relax, enjoy dinner, and spend your first night on the mountain.
Meals & Accommodation:
After breakfast, you will continue trekking through the forest as the landscape gradually changes into moorland. The trail becomes steeper as you gain altitude, offering stunning views as you approach the Shira Plateau. By the afternoon, you will arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where you can enjoy the open views and fresh mountain air before dinner and overnight.
Meals & Accommodation:
After breakfast, you will trek across the wide Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on Kilimanjaro. The trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to enjoy the expansive landscapes and views of Kibo Peak ahead. This day is important for acclimatization as you continue to gain altitude gradually. You will arrive at Shira 2 Camp in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay.
Meals & Accommodation:
After breakfast, you will climb towards Lava Tower, reaching a higher altitude before descending again. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy is essential for acclimatization. The landscape becomes more rugged and alpine, with dramatic rock formations. After spending time at Lava Tower, you will descend to Barranco Camp, located in a scenic valley beneath the impressive Barranco Wall. Dinner and overnight will be at the camp.
Meals & Accommodation:
After breakfast, you will tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep but manageable climb that rewards you with stunning views. After reaching the top, the trail continues through valleys and ridges with beautiful scenery. This shorter day allows more time for acclimatization as you make your way to Karanga Camp. You will arrive in the afternoon for rest, dinner, and overnight stay.
Meals & Accommodation:
After breakfast, you will continue your ascent to Barafu Camp, the base camp for your summit attempt. The environment becomes more alpine and barren, with sweeping views across the mountain. You will arrive at Barafu Camp in the afternoon and spend the rest of the day resting and preparing for the summit climb. An early dinner will be served before you go to sleep.
Meals & Accommodation:
Around midnight, you will begin your summit attempt. The climb is steep and takes place in the cold and darkness, but reaching Stella Point and then Uhuru Peak at sunrise is a truly unforgettable moment. From the summit, you will enjoy breathtaking views of glaciers and the surrounding landscape. After celebrating your achievement, you will descend back to Barafu Camp for a short rest before continuing down to Mweka Camp for dinner and overnight stay.
Meals & Accommodation:
After breakfast, you will descend through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The trail becomes greener and more vibrant as you lose altitude. Upon arrival, you will receive your summit certificates and celebrate your successful climb. You will then be transferred back to Arusha or Moshi, marking the end of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
